The San Mateo Department of Health is form by 7 health departments which are
the following: Aging and Adult Services, Correctional Health, Emergency Medical Services,
Environmental Health, Food and Nutrition Services, Mental Health Services, and, Public
Health.
Emergency Care Services (EMS) is responsible for coordinating the activities of
pre-hospital emergency medical care providers, including medical dispatchers, fire service,
first responders, and air and ground ambulance dispatchers. In addition, EMS works closely
with The County Health Officer to insure the proper planning and response in case of medical
and health disasters.

The Environmental Health Division inspects 3,500 restaurant and food establishments,
4,000 multiple housing units, 1,000 community swimming pools, and, response to more than
2,500 complaints each year. These measures are taken to insure that the environment remains
safe and healthy for the public.

Mental Health Services Division insures the mental well being of the community
ranging from infants to Adults. Over 11,000 patients are treated annually from schools,
psychiatric emergency services, community-based organizations, and, from the comfort of the
patients own home. This division offers a wide range of reserves which include: Youth
Services that help emotionally disturbed youth to stay home and progress in school,
Transition Services to help 18 to 22 year olds cope with the transition of adulthood, and,
Medical services such as Healthy Families.
